Kombucha is a flavorful, fizzy, fermented beverage made from water, tea, sugar and a S.C.O.B.Y. (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) culture. A.K.A. booch, KT (kombucha tea), and mushroom tea, kombucha is packed with benefits.
Brewed from black, green and white tea, kombucha has many of the same health benefits as tea and more. How to Enjoy Kombucha
Kombucha is detoxifying, so start with a small amount and increase your intake slowly. For best results, drink booch in small, frequent doses rather than large amounts. Try drinking 4 ounces before breakfast and lunch daily to reduce appetite and support digestion. Great Brands include GT’s and High Country. Look for less than 3 grams of sugar per serving
Most of the sugar used to make KT is eaten via fermentation, resulting in a low sugar drink. Most homemade, unflavored KT contains 2 grams of sugar per cup.
KT contains about 1/4 the amount of caffeine as regular tea. Exact amounts depend on the type of tea used.
The small amounts of alcohol in KT (typically 0.5-1%) increase nutrient absorption.
When to Use Caution
Use caution if pregnant, nursing, immunocompromised, or intolerant to sugar, caffeine or alcohol.
Kombucha can be applied topically to the skin to heal acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin issues. The SCOBY can also be blended into shakes or smoothies, or made into gummy treats.
